Counselling & Me #01

Counselling &
Me
I believe that the most important factor in establishing a positive therapeutic counselling relationship is that you, the client, feel comfortable with me the counsellor. A relationship of trust can then begin to grow allowing for confidence to flourish in an atmosphere of mutual respect. My aim within this environment would be to heip you explore your feelings and thoughts in great depth. Thereby enabling you to gain a much clearer perspective both of yourself and your situation. Let me now tell you a little about myself and what I do, and how, I became a counsellor.

For 15 years of my life I worked in a service environment dealing with the general public and managing staff who served the customers. This working environment generated many 'people problems' both with customers and staff. I became quite good at resolving difficulties with customers and also helping staff to overcome personal problems. Following the birth of my first child I decided that I would use these natural abilities and I started the long journey into becoming a qualified counsellor.

Following graduation ending five years of core study and gaining many hours of practical experience. I am now an MBACP Accredited member of the Bristish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and UKRCP Registered Independant Counsellor/Psychotherapist. I hold the certificate in Counselling skills and the certificate in Counselling studies Level 2, Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling Level 4 and a further Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision Level 6 all awarded by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body.

Through intensive study I understand the importance of continuing my professional development by keeping up to date with both psychological literature and research. Therefore I frequently attend training workshops and courses to benefit both clients and myself.

My approach when working is integrative, this means that I combine aspects of different therapeutic models and techniques to provide a unique approach that is tailored to meet each particular clients needs.

Together with my private clients I work both as a counsellor and supervisor of counsellors within a local charity. Within this Local Authority I work within two schools one where I counsel secondary children and the other where I promote and facilitate Anti-Bullying Forums. I also provide within this setting supervision to both trainee and qualified counsellors.

I am also contracted within the National Health Service working as an associate counsellor for a local Hospital within my area.

With play therapy I counsel younger children after finishing my training and voluntary work at a London based school for The Place2Be an innovative award-wining charity that works within schools to improve the emotional well-being of children and their families.

As with all registered counsellors I adhere to the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice requiring me to meet, on a regular basis, with a MBACP (Accred) registered supervisor to ensure that the quality and effectiveness of my work is maintained to the highest level thereby ensuring a high standard of care. At these meeting parts of the counselling sessions are discussed but identities remain secure and confidential. I have CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) clearance.
