It has been my experience that at one time or another during our lives many of us come up against situations that are just too difficult to manage or understand. We may feel an overwhelming sense of sadness, recognise noticeable changes within our relationships or begin to feel anxious for no apparent reason. Whilst for many people this can be a temporary state, for others it can cause continuous distress with a sense that life will never be free of difficulties.
When we do experience times like this it can be for a variety of reasons. Perhaps something from our past that is still impacting on our present day lives, a breakdown within a relationship, a death of someone close, or maybe the pressures and stresses of the world we live in today.
Whatever the reason these times can be distressing and not easy to cope with and often, we struggle to know what to do to help ourselves. Some may choose to talk to a close friend or relative but often these people are either to close to provide unbiased and confidential help, or indeed, sometimes they may be part of the problem itself.
After many years of training a counsellor can provide a trusting and non-judgemental environment where people can talk through their fears and concerns with the assurance they will receive unbiased, confidential therapeutic help focused on enabling them to get back on their feet again.
Counselling is a two-way talking therapy which requires both people to be fully engaged in the process. At times it can be a very emotional journey during which the client may find out more about themselves than they might have ever imagined but, of course, the therapist is there to provide oomfort, guidance and support throughout the experience.
There is no fixed amount of time that the counselling process takes to achieve positive results, it varies between different people and the depth of their problems. However, the client is always in control of their situation and it is they who will determine how long therapy may last. The aim of the counsellor is to ensure that the therapy is effective and continues only for as long as it is considered beneficial to the client
